Mini-Splits and Wall Space: How Much Room Do You Really Need?
One of the most common questions we hear from homeowners is, “How big will the indoor unit look on my wall?”
It’s a fair concern. Wall-mounted systems (or mini-splits) are known for their quiet, efficient performance, but many people imagine a large, bulky unit that takes over the room. The reality is that modern designs are much sleeker and more compact than most expect.
How Big Are Wall-Mounted Units, Really?
Most indoor units measure between 790mm and 890mm wide - about the width of a small coffee table or roughly half the length of a standard sofa.
The image below shows some of our most popular residential models side by side, from the Daikin Stylish (798mm) to the Samsung WindFree Elite (889mm).

When you see the units in context, they’re not nearly as large as you might imagine. They sit close to the wall, usually projecting less than 25cm (10 inches), and quickly blend into the background once installed.
Choosing the Right Spot
Placement plays a big role in how visible your unit looks and how efficiently it runs. Here are a few common options:
Above a doorway or window – Keeps the unit high and out of your main line of sight.
Centered on a wall – Ideal in symmetrical spaces where it looks balanced.
Opposite your main seating area – So you feel the cooling without always noticing the unit.
Compact models like the Daikin Stylish are an excellent choice that delivers strong performance.
Air Con Unit Size - Choose a Unit Designed to Suit Your Space
Today’s mini-splits come in more than just plain white. Models like the Mitsubishi MSZ-LN are available in finishes such as black, silver, and even ruby red, letting you match your décor or make the unit a subtle feature of the room.
Some models have sleek, modern lines that look more like a soundbar than an appliance.
Sizing Up Your Solution: What BTU Air Con Unit Do You Need?
A crucial step in ensuring year-round comfort is selecting an air conditioning unit with the correct power output. Too small, and it will struggle to heat or cool your space efficiently; too large, and it will cycle on and off constantly, wasting energy.
The required British Thermal Units (BTU) depend on the size of your room, glazing type, and sun exposure. Our specialised BTU Calculator tool will quickly help determine the optimal unit size for your unique space, guaranteeing maximum efficiency and comfort.
