| THE
GROWING DEMAND FOR DOMESTIC AIR CONDITIONING |
|
| |
The
demand for domestic air conditioning is
continuing to grow, spurred on by a number
of factors including weather, lifestyles,
comfort, pollution and the rise in household
disposable incomes.
If
you compare the growth in the home air conditioning
market with that of car air conditioning,
ten years ago only about 10 percent of new
cars at the luxury end of the market had
air conditioning. In 2006, about 75 percent
of new cars had air conditioning. There
is a similar pattern developing in the growth
of residential air conditioning.
We
now demand higher standards of living and
comfort. We are becoming accustomed to air
conditioning in cars, at work, whilst shopping,
in hotels and on holiday, we now have come
to expect higher levels of indoor comfort.
The
number of urban homes has risen significantly
over recent years, meaning that opening
a window to cool and ventilate a
|
|
| |
home
creates concerns over noise, air quality
and security. Building trends are now moving
towards constant indoor comfort, but raising
or lowering the average indoor temperature
is not enough. Today factors such as dampness,
condensation, draughts and air quality must
be addressed as part of the Build Regulations
and Decent Homes Standard, however, air
conditioning systems are seen as the ideal
solution to alleviate these problems.
Recently,
the Government’s introduction of the
Decent Homes Standard has raised concerns
over indoor air quality. A decent home should
be seen as a “healthy home”
because of the health risks involved in
not having a warm and well-ventilated healthy
environment. Such proposals have raised
anxiety over indoor air quality and this
has made people think about these issues.
In
addition to these health concerns poor indoor
air quality can lead to excess moisture
and condensation, which in turncan cause
expensive structural damage, peeling wallpaper,
discoloration of paint, musty odours and
condensation in walls and on windows, all
of which have been factors leading to more
people installing air conditioning.
As
the demand for domestic air conditioning
systems gathers pace, manufacturers are
able to lower their prices, as they are
able to mass produce and distribute, thus
lower unit costs.
Manufacturers
are now producing more energy efficient
systems, which use less than 80% of the
energy formerly used. Previously, many households
could not use air conditioning systems
due to the
|
| |

|
cost
of running the equipment, however, with
the array of new ultra-efficient inverter
driven systems on the market, households
are less concerned about the cost of running
these systems. Inverter driven compressors,
vary the speed of the compressors, delivering
precise cooling or heating power as required,
saving valuable energy.
Many
of the leading manufacturers of air conditioning
systems are also reacting to the demands
of the residential air conditioning market
by integrating air purification filters
in their air conditioning units. One such
filter employed by
|
| |
manufacturers
includes a Titanium Apatite Photocatalyst.
This filter excels at adsorbing viruses
and bacteria, this apatite has been partially
"replaced" with titanium at the
atomic level, enabling viruses and bacteria
adsorbed by the apatite to contact the titanium,
which then completely removes them.
When
light strikes titanium oxide, hydrogen peroxide
and hydroxyl radicals are formed. These
two substances process powerful oxidising
properties and through mutual interaction
they are able to decompose oxidative, whilst
also removing bacteria and deactivating
viruses. With more and more people having
to now smoke at home rather than in public
places, concerns over indoor air quality
are becoming more important to domestic
dwellings, however, the photocatalytic air
cleaner deodorises 85% of smoke particles,
making it nearly undetectable to the human
nose.
Along
with the powerful dust collecting and deodorising
performance of many of today’s units,
manufacturers are designing systems that
are ultra quiet, allowing the customer to
use them with confidence in places where
silence is valued, such as a bedroom.
When
air-conditioning is needed, it is essential
to ensure high efficiency units are installed,
which will minimise the amount of energy
used and in turn lead to lower running costs.
The
advances in air conditioning technology
is a viable solution to help meet the demand
for energy efficiency products and reduce
climate change. We at Cold Control have
a wide range of solutions to fit all budgets.
Everyday, we supply residential customers
with energy efficient equipment from some
of the leading names in the air conditioning
industry. We also recognise the importance
of implementing a programme of maintenance,
ensuring your air conditioning system is
maintained to its optimum performance.
Air
conditioning is an ideal way of ensuring
a constant healthy indoor environment and
with efficient systems, households will
not have to pay the earth to get such solutions
installed. We have been supplying, designing
and installing domestic air conditioning
for over 15 years and through our continued
knowledge and expertise, we are now one
of the market leaders in residential air
conditioning.

| COLD
CONTROL - A CUT ABOVE THE REST |
|
| |
We
have recently been called upon by a local
butcher to help in the redevelopment of
their new site. CJ Read, a butcher based
in Medstead, Hampshire was trying to create
the largest, most modern butchers in the
South.
We
helped supply the majority of the refrigeration
equipment in Read’s last shop, which
was located close to their new site. Norman
Read, the proprietor of CJ Read, asked us
for our expertise again in specifying equipment
for his new and improved site which included
a dual compartment cold room, prep area
and a shop area to incorporate the ever
growing number of people using his shop.
Norman
commented, “Cold Control did a fantastic
job on the last shop and their level of
service and expertise was second to none
so I did not hesitate to contact them again”.
We
worked around the various builders and contractors
|
|
| |
involved
in the project to install and specify state
of the art climate controlled equipment
to help Reads become one of the most prolific
butchers in the South.
We
are based just a few hundred yards from
the new site and have installed a variety
of top of the range refrigeration systems.
Within the main shop area we installed a
15 metre Pastorfrigor Delta refrigerated
display counter, with a 840mm stainless
steel deck, which accommodates the extended
fresh meat selection and houses delicatessen
style produce including cheese, fish and
olives. This display counter benefits from
a hydraulic lift, which opens the glass
front making it easier to keep clean and
also reduces the risk of injury for the
butchers who are constantly leaning in to
clean it.
The
counter also has an easy reading digital
temperature display and is fan assisted
to keep the temperature
constant. Lastly the units have under counter
storage which is ideal for prepping meat,
thereby aiding productivity.
We
also installed an energy efficient Mitsubishi
inverter driven heat pump air conditioning
system. The
|
| |
|
system
provides energy savings of up to 70% annually
when compared to a previous non-inverter
model, and has a very low starting current
of only 5 amps. Operating noise has been
reduced thanks to improvements in fan design,
while existing pipe work is reusable for
easier maintenance and installation.
The
system adheres to the Government’s
R-410A standard, and the air conditioners
and heat pumps utilise the most up to date
technology available for efficient and reliable
operation. This eliminates the possibility
that refrigerant leaking from your system
might contribute to the hole in the ozone
layer, as emissions of R-22 are considered
by some experts to be a significant factor
in depleting the ozone layer.
Also
this unit qualifies for the Enhanced Capital
Allowance (ECA) scheme, the Government’s
incentive for businesses to invest in energy
efficient equipment.
The
new site incorporates a dual compartment
coldroom, which has a separate freezer and
chiller unit, which both include hygienic
stainless steel hanging rails designed to
accommodate
|
| |
a
total of 5500kg of meat. Temperature distribution
inside the coldroom is one of the most difficult
features to control.
As
the temperature differs in the various parts
of the chamber its distribution depends
on correct design, however, both these compartments
were fitted with forced air low profile
coolers complete with electric defrost and
gravity drain which evenly distribute the
cold air creating a uniform temperature.
Both cold rooms refrigerants were fitted
with low noise condensers set just outside
the shop. We ensured that these condensers
emitted low noise, as a couple of residential
flats are located within close proximity.
The
prep area was fitted with a Kueba comfort
DP air forced dual discharge air cooler
system with integrated air baffle plates
for low air speed cooling. This unit has
an airflow rate from 930 to 8240 m³/h
and temperature application range of 0°C
to +20°C. The unit is ideal for workers
who are constantly working around the area
as the dual discharge creates less draughts
promoting staff comfort. In addition, the
unit is ultra quiet complimenting good working
conditions. Lastly, the high-grade, food-quality
powder coating of the unit makes it easy
to clean and provides optimal corrosion
protection, and the removable end panels
facilitate easy cleaning.
Both
the dual compartment cold rooms and the
prep area were Eurovent certified, this
ensuring that the actual performance of
certified products match the claimed performance
regarding such factors as noise levels,
thermal characteristics and energy consumption
which all help to lower the carbon emissions
of the building as a whole.
The
complete site required precise internal
environmental control, regarding temperature,
hygiene, thermal and fire safety. We fitted
72 linear meters of PIR rigid urethane core
panels because of their proven thermal and
performance properties. These panels have
excellent strength to weight ratio and spanning
characteristics, the lightweight materials
mean less structural
steel is required, providing
|
| |
both
cost and energy savings.
PIR
panels offer a greater thermal performance
enabling a reduction of thickness by up
to 50%, which results in maximizing internal
space. The panels can be easily washed and
cleaned and are not prone to surface or
interstitial condensation, as this could
lead to the formation of bacteria and mould
growth on the surface causing health and
safety issues.
Norman Read said, “Cold Control have
been great, they have worked around the
variety of contractors and have specified
top of the range climate controlled systems
which means customers can be safe in the
knowledge that this state of the art refrigerated
site guarantees that food is sold in the
freshest possible condition”.
Mark
Grant, Managing Director of Cold Control
commented,
“We have used a variety of top name
equipment to ensure
that Reads’ customers receive the
freshest food every time”. |
